Research Interests

Dr. Beals’ research involves the use of stable isotope tracer methodology to study in vivo metabolism, whole-body, and in various tissues (e.g. liver, muscle, adipose). He is interested in interventions to improve metabolic health in people with obesity and elucidate the mechanisms responsible for insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction in this population.  He is currently involved in studies to determine the regulation of liver fibrosis in people with NAFLD and obesity as well as studies designed to determine the effectiveness of sleep extension for the treatment of obesity-related metabolic dysfunction.
